Key Lime Pie: First attempt.

Now THIS, my dear friends, is a LESSON.

Deal with the consequences of what you cook. Say, a VERY SOUR key lime pie.

The day before my lolo’s death, my older sister and I made our first attempt in baking KEY LIME PIE. It was her idea actually. She got the “easy bake” recipe from a magazine, bought the necessary ingredients, and voila! one fine Monday morning (super clueless we both were to what was about to unfold the next morning), I became the sous to the chef.

Pretty pretty key lime! We ended up playing with them for a good 10 minutes.

Exhibit A. That’s my sister by the way. Ha ha!

Whipping cream was the happiest moment of my life.

IT REALLY WASN’T SO BAD. The sourness was just a little surprising. Ha ha! Learned a lot from this actually. Our filling in general wasn’t enough, sugar and cream in the filling were also not enough. Our key limes were too sour? It all goes back to that, really. Ha ha.

Sure Aix, go blame the fruit.

What’s cookin’?

The Montes kitchen was very busy last week. I really don’t know where we’re all getting this drive to be surprisingly active in the kitchen — to the point that it has turned into one of the most anticipated family activities at home. It started with my sister Julie. Now my brother and I (..I thought the world would end the day I start cooking but it didn’t, so..) have been cooking our asses off non-stop!

1. Kuya Gab’s Korean Japchae

I don’t know if the picture depicts it but that dish was smoldering with umami goodness.

2. Aix’s Purple Onion Rings

I know, it should be the big white ones. Ha ha but these purple onions were what we had at home when I decided to experiment on deep frying. Wasn’t bad for snacking — not to mention I finally fulfilled my long time craving for onion rings.

3. Aix’s… I really don’t know what that was but they say it tasted good

Ha ha! Beef cuts marinated in garlic and Worcestershire (lots of it) sauce. Turned out tough though because I didn’t boil the beef long enough. Apparently tenderizing beef takes forever? But taste wise, I passed! Or the sauce did? Lol!

4. Mom’s Healthy Sunday Lunch

If last Sunday we had green french beans, this Sunday we had the yellow ones with mum’s dory!

All of those were remarkably way better than the hospital food I had last night while keeping watch of Lolo (that will be for another entry). I hope this improvement in kitchen involvement stays a long time because I am undeniably having fun out of it!
